RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

We work according to the Responsible Tourism Program, a framework developed to promote a more sustainable tourism where companies, destinations and municipalities work together for increased environmental responsibility, support more resource-efficient solutions, and strengthen local community development. The program is based on GSTC’s global standard for sustainable tourism.  

 

Through the program, improvement initiatives are carried out that benefit visitors and residents alike, create jobs and viable businesses, and take place on the terms of nature and culture. This approach is increasingly important as more and more visitors seek to leave the places they visit in a better condition than they found them.

SUSTAINABILITY POLICY - HOTEL GAMLA FÄNGELSET

Hotel 1861 has a clear goal to be environmentally friendly and climate-smart.

We work actively to convey our knowledge of the cultural heritage we manage – the County Prison in Umeå (1861).

The operation and development of the hotel business takes place in collaboration with the property owner, the Swedish Real Estate Agency, and with local suppliers.

Our goal is to offer unique accommodation in a unique environment and give visitors insight into an important era in Swedish social history.

We want to arouse the visitor’s curiosity by conveying interesting history and offering experiences in a way that is authentic.

Our product is adapted so that the visitor has the opportunity to gain understanding and respect for Swedish penal history.

We want to preserve and use the building in a sustainable way and contribute to the economic development of the local culture and community.

We encourage our guests and visitors to discover our destinations, our beautiful nature and to buy quality products from local entrepreneurs.

We are constantly working to improve our operations, including through feedback and customer reviews from visitors in combination with our sustainability policy as a basis.
